By raising awareness about these council openings, we aim to inspire qualified individuals to consider joining this important initiative and to encourage broader engagement with sustainable practices that benefit communities across Canada.

The Government of Canada has announced an exciting opportunity for those passionate about sustainable development. The Sustainable Development Advisory Council (SDAC) is now accepting applications to fill 17 volunteer positions for a 4-year term starting in May 2025. This council plays a critical role in shaping Canada’s Federal Sustainable Development Strategy, offering a platform for representatives from diverse backgrounds to influence environmental policy and sustainable initiatives. If you have expertise in sustainable development and a desire to make a difference, this is your chance.

What is the Sustainable Development Advisory Council?

The SDAC, established under the Federal Sustainable Development Act, advises the Minister of Environment and Climate Change on matters related to sustainable development. Members meet annually with the Minister and participate in consultations on draft strategies, providing input and expertise. During the development of a new Federal Sustainable Development Strategy, the Council holds at least two meetings to discuss and provide feedback on drafts, supporting Canada’s commitment to sustainable growth, climate responsibility, and environmental stewardship.

Who Can Apply?

The Council is seeking representatives from across Canada, including:

  • Indigenous Peoples
  • Environmental non-governmental organizations
  • Business and labour organizations
  • Residents of specific provinces and territories:
    • Newfoundland
    • Prince Edward Island
    • New Brunswick
    • Saskatchewan
    • Northwest Territories
    • Nunavut
    • Yukon

With a focus on diversity, the Council aims to include voices that reflect Canada’s regional, linguistic, and employment equity representation. In addition to these groups, applications are open to individuals with deep expertise in sustainable development.

What You’ll Do on the Council

As a member of the SDAC, you will:

  • Advise on Draft Strategy: During public consultations, Council members discuss draft strategies, participate in contextual discussions, and submit recommendations to the Minister.
  • Engage in Public and Government Activities: Members may contribute to public engagement initiatives, helping to inform Canadians about sustainable development and ensuring federal policymakers understand diverse perspectives on these issues.
  • Represent Your Constituency: Members are expected to bring forward their community’s concerns, interests, and views on sustainable development, ensuring that the Council reflects a broad spectrum of Canadian society.

The Council offers a collaborative space where members can interact with other experts, share knowledge, and engage in impactful discussions. The Minister may also refer any matter of sustainable development to the Council, giving members the chance to offer input on emerging issues.

Why Apply?

This is a unique volunteer opportunity to contribute directly to Canada’s sustainable future. As a Council member, you will:

  • Shape national policies on sustainable development
  • Collaborate with a network of professionals and advocates across Canada
  • Play a key role in addressing Canada’s sustainability goals, particularly in light of the 2022-2026 Federal Sustainable Development Strategy

While these are volunteer positions, members are reimbursed for travel expenses associated with meetings, and Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Sustainable Development Office provides Secretariat functions for support.
